The Web-Shooters are a pair of wrist-worn devices used by Spider-People across the different dimensions, mainly created by Peter Parker to release a strong, spider silk-like material that they use for web-swinging and binding, among others, completing their spider persona's ensemble.

Its web-shooting mechanism is activated by a button in the middle of their palm, easily accessible when the middle and ring fingers are folded inwards to reach for the button, resulting in the Spider-People's trademark hand gesture.

History[]

Earth-616[]

The Web shooters are wrist-mounted devices, generally worn in pairs, that were created by Peter Parker when he became the superhero Spider-Man. Noting that throwing spider webs was not part of his powers, Peter would create some bracelets for his fight against crime. When he went to another universe, he would briefly give his student one of his web shooters until he made some of his own.

A new version of the Web Shooters were created by Peter Parker for his daughter, May Parker, even though he would end up regretting it later. [1]

Earth-1610[]

On Earth-1610, the Web-shooters are wrist-mounted devices, generally worn in pairs, that were originally invented by Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man, and used as both weapons and a method of transportation by firing strands of artificial spider-webbing out of a nozzle located on the device.

Sometime later Miles Morales would encounter another Peter Parker who wore the web shooter on his wrist. He used the web-shooter unsteadily while clinging to Peter's unconscious body. Later, Peter gave Miles one of his web-shooters so they could escape Alchemax by simultaneously web-swinging from each alternating hand together. Miles was again later able to use it to swing away with his Uncle Aaron. Later, Aunt May made a new pair of web-shooters for Miles and gave them to him along with a new Spider-Man suit for him to customize.[2]

Capabilities[]

The most common use of the web-shooters is to fire a thin, yet resilient, string of webbing which is adhesive at the tip, allowing the Spider-Person to web-swing for movement and speed. Two ends of the string can also be attached in order to hold two objects together or create a rope line that can be walked or stood upon. Many strands of this particular webbing can also be woven together to create things like sacks, blankets and even garments.

Another common use are widely-spread webs which are adhesive almost entirely throughout their mass, usually useful for binding objects or enemies. The tensile and adhesive strength of this webbing is so great that even individuals several times stronger than Spider-People (such as the Rhino or various Golbins) have trouble breaking free if enough webbing is used. Spider-People can also use this web to build large "structures" such as "spider nests", barriers and trampolines. It also makes a good distraction if shot directly onto an enemy's face.

The webbing is versatile enough that some Spider-People are able to produce or create modifications and variants which suit their own unique fighting styles, power sets or opponents. For example, Miles Morales' webbing is more conductive than usual, in order to enhance his bio-electricity powers, Julia Carpenter's webs are typically made with psionic energy linked to her thoughts, Miguel O'Hara of Earth-928 utilizes a laser-like web that fires from his costume.

Peter Parker deliberately designed his artificial webs to dissolve into almost undetectable fragments after a few hours both so that he would not endanger others leaving webs lying around, but also to make it difficult for the webs to reverse-engineered by anyone who found them. Some other Spider-People utilize their own natural webbing which also somehow have the same time limit. This time limit is not absolute, however, as Peter can also manufacture webbing which does not dissolve, and some Spider-People are so skilled that they are able to craft intricate objects such as a wardrobe of clothing completely out of webbing.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics and many of its adaptations, the web-shooters are loaded with artificially-created web fluid that come in refillable cartridges or some form of it.
    • In addition, other versions of Spider-People have gained the ability to produce organic webbing and thus have no need for web-shooters. Webs without the need for shooters was first introduced for Peter Parker when he donned the black suit that would later be revealed as a symbiote. The first Spider-Man with true organic webbing as part of his basic physiology was Miguel O'Hara, in Spider-man 2099 #3. The Sam Raimi film trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire later popularized the concept, and it was later introduced in the comics before being retconned away once more. Other versions like Peter Porker also have this ability.
  • In the comics Gwen's version of the web-shooters were created by the retired superheroine Janet Van Dyne, however it is most likely not the case in the Spider-Verse saga.
